As the Associate Director for Research Computing for the Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC), Phil Maechling develops and performs large-scale seismic hazard calculations using high performance computing. He also develops and releases open-source seismological and engineering software used in ground motion modeling and simulations.

Before joining SCEC, Maechling was a member of the Professional Staff in the Caltech Seismological Laboratory in Pasadena, California. While at Caltech, he worked on the TriNet project with scientists and software developers at Caltech and USGS to develop a state-of-the-art data acquisition and real-time earthquake monitoring system. His commercial software development experience includes firmware development for two-way mobile radios at a commercial radio manufacturer, and software design and development for Hughes Aircraft and TRW on military command and control systems and on a National Missile Defense special study.
