Chunhui Zhao is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Statewise California Earthquake Center (SCEC). Chunhui Zhao holds a Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering, and his research interests lay broadly within computational mechanics—particularly fracture mechanics, geophysics and multiphysics. His research focuses on developing novel rupture models for earthquake simulations, employing novel constitutive formulations to characterize the interaction between on-fault rupture and off-fault damage, and exploring depth-dependent fault damage zone structures, slow slip events, and earthquake cycle simulations.

He is also deeply interested in hydro-mechanical-thermal coupling and has contributed to the development of tools that model fully coupled dynamics of pulse-power fracturing with porous flow in rock samples, aimed at enhancing subsurface energy extraction during his internship at Idaho National Laboratory. Additionally, he contributed to the hydro-mechanical modeling of laboratory-scale borehole breakout tests as part of the FORGE project.
