About Me Publications
Dr. Jamison H. Steidl is a Research Seismologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Earth Research Institute, and an adjunct Professor in the Earth Science department. Dr. Steidl began his career in Earth Science on the East Coast of the United States, obtaining a B.S. in Physics with a minor in Geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1987. Continuing to combine his love of the outdoors with Geology and Physics, Dr. Steidl obtained a M.S. in Geophysics from RPI in 1989 before realizing that if he was going to study strong-motion seismology and earthquake engineering, California was an obvious place to pursue a doctoral degree. In 1995, Dr. Steidl obtained a Ph.D. in Earth Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) studying near field ground motions. Dr. Steidl took a hands-on approach to his science, getting familiar with seismic instrumentation operations, and deploying monitoring stations to obtain the data that would answer his scientific questions.

Currently, Dr. Steidl is the Principal Investigator of the UCSB Geotechnical Array facilities. This engineering seismology research infrastructure is designed to provide the observational case histories from earthquakes that will allow for improvements in our ability to predict ground shaking from future earthquakes, including non-linear soil behavior, soil-foundation-structure interaction, and liquefaction. Dr. Steidl is also responsible for the Southern California Earthquake Center’s Portable Instrumentation Center and Borehole Instrumentation Program. He also serves as the strong motion coordinator for the US Geological Survey’s Advanced National Seismic System. Dr. Steidl is a member of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, the Seismological Society of America, and the American Geophysical Union.
