Quakeworx: A Community Science Gateway for Earthquake Research, Education, and Cybertraining

Computational earthquake science increasingly relies on sophisticated simulation software, high-performance computing (HPC), and large research datasets, yet these resources often require substantial computational expertise. Quakeworx addresses this challenge by offering browser-based access to earthquake science applications, HPC resources, and data services through reproducible workflows and federated authentication.
Over the past year, Quakeworx expanded its scientific application ecosystem, education activities, and cybertraining. The gateway supports dynamic rupture simulation, earthquake cycle modeling, broadband ground motion simulation, operational earthquake forecasting, earthquake–tsunami modeling, reduced-order modeling, and interactive notebooks. New capabilities include the SCEC Broadband Platform (BBP), RSQSim, ROMs for Peak Ground Velocity (PGV), Southern San Andreas Fault ROM, and Rupast Jupyter, complementing SeisSol, Tandem, and UCERF3-ETAS. Applications run directly in a web browser on ACCESS and other cyberinfrastructure resources.
Quakeworx also made important contributions to education and workforce development. In 2026, it supported the SCEC Tandem Training Workshop, which brought together 39 researchers from 22 institutions across 8 countries, and the Joint SeisSol and ExaHyPE User Workshop, Training, and Hackathon, which drew 63 participants. These workshops incorporated Quakeworx into hands-on training activities, demonstrating its role in supporting computational earthquake science education and community engagement.
Quakeworx also supported the 2026 SCEC Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE), in which four undergraduate researchers used Quakeworx and SeisSol on ACCESS Expanse to investigate dynamic rupture scenarios for ShakeOut Scenario 2.0. The resulting models and data products are planned for dissemination via Quakeworx.
Built on the OneSciencePlace (OSP) platform, Quakeworx integrates Drupal, Tapis, federated authentication, containerized applications, and data management into a reusable science gateway framework. As Quakeworx prepares for production deployment, ongoing work focuses on expanding the application ecosystem, integrating additional cyberinfrastructure resources, and enabling FAIR, reproducible computational earthquake science.
