Project Abstract |
We organized and conducted a workshop focused on the application of high-performance computing in seismology, aimed at training students and early career scientists in key skills essential for SCEC’s interdisciplinary computational research. Building on the success of the 2023 CyberTraining for Seismology workshop, this year’s event featured an updated curriculum and improved methods, informed by both the priorities of the new Statewide Center and lessons learned from last year’s workshop. Additionally, the workshop leveraged the recently developed Quakeworx Science Gateway, providing attendees with access to high-performance computing resources to enhance their research capabilities. |
SCEC Community Models Used | Community Fault Model (CFM), Community Velocity Model (CVM) |
Usage Description | Workshop tutorials described how to access the SCEC Community Fault Models and the SCEC Community Velocity Models. |
Intellectual Merit | This workshop introduced students and early career scientists to the methods and tools used in modern seismological computational research. By utilizing the Quakeworx Gateway, the workshop streamlined access to advanced research applications and high-performance computing resources, significantly enhancing the students' ability to engage with cutting-edge tools. |
Broader Impacts | By focusing on the participation of students and early career professionals, this workshop helped shape and inspire the next generation of computational researchers in seismology. |
Project Participants | David Benham (SDSC), Yehuda Ben-Zion (USC), Akash Bhatthal (SCEC), Scott Callaghan (SCEC), Iris Christadler (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU)), Amit Chourasia (UCLA), Ahmed Elbanna (UIUC), Alice-Agnes Gabriel (UCSD), Tran Huynh (SCEC), Piyush Karki (LMU), Fabian Kutschera (UCSD), Philip Maechling (SCEC), David May (UCSD), Pascal Meunir (SDSC), Kevin Milner (USGS), Zihua Niu (LMU), Bar Oryan (UCSD), Edric Pauk (SCEC), Francesco Serafini (University of Bristol), Ilya Shunko (SDSC), Fabio Silva (SCEC), Mei-Hui Su (SCEC), Napat Tainpakdipat (UIUC), Max Werner (University of Bristol), Mona Wong-Barnum (SDSC), Choonhan Youn (SDSC), Jeena Yun (UCSD), Chunhui Zhao (UIUC). |
Exemplary Figure | Figure 1: Google Analytics data for this year's CyberTraining for Seismology workshop (held from January 21 to January 24, 2025) shows that the workshop website had over 1,300 active users from more than 10 different countries. |
