I am a fourth year student at Cal Poly Pomona. I am currently studying applied mathematics. This summer I am working with Cal Tech and SCEC to investigate the performance of a deep-learning phase picker on large magnitude earthquakes. For this project, I test the deep-learning picker PhaseNet on several large magnitude earthquakes to assess its performance compared to phase picks made manually by analysts or made by other automatic systems. I am tasked with running the PhaseNet algorithm (written in Python) on seismic data from selected earthquakes. I am also analyzing the resulting phase pick data and comparing it with existing manual and automatic phase picks from the Southern California earthquake database. This requires some programming and data analysis, such as plotting phase picks on waveform data and making scatter plots and/or histograms to compare data.
