AKOPIAN Samvel Tsolaki began his professional scientific activity in 1971 in the field of the study of the Earth by the method of free oscillations. In 1975 he solved the problem of “Base-line corrections” in the construction of global parametric models of the Earth by introducing a dynamic, frequency-dependent shear modulus of the earth’s interior. It was shown that the classical models of the Earth should be built at a reference frequency of 1 Hz.

1991-2001 Head of the Department of mathematical modelling of seismic processes of the NSSP under the government of Armenia.
2011-2022 Chief Scientific officer researcher of the IPE RAS, Moscow.
Since 2022 General director, International Center of the Seismic Risk Global Monitoring (LLC SeiEn), Yerevan, Armenia.
Since 2007, mass monitoring and forecasting of strong earthquakes around the world has been conducted using the LMTP-SPQ software developed by Akopian.

His main scientific interests are in the fields of free oscillation of the Earth, seismotectonics, seismic risk assessments, earthquake prediction, induced seismicity, entropy seismology and cosmology. He has over 93 publications, two monograph and 5 computer developments. Akopian is a member of the Russian Expert Council on Earthquake Prediction Professional experience.

In 1995 Akopian S. was invited by US Department of the Interior USGS to USA, in Columbia University and Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC), to discuss and test his algorithm for earthquake prediction in California. K. Aki noted about the method of Akopian S.: "The approach is new in the application of the dynamic theory of hierarchical systems to earthquake preparation processes. His method is significantly different from the existing probabilistic method for predicting strong earthquakes in California. The proposed method is universal, it can be applied to almost any seismic region of the world, but it should take at least 10 years for the scientific community to adopt it". K. Aki
