Project Abstract |
We hosted a one-day Community Geodetic Model (CGM) Workshop in conjunction with the SCEC Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 7th, 2024 at the Hilton Palm Springs in California. We received 32 applications to join the workshop, ultimately accommodating 28 in-person participants, including us two conveners, and one online participant, who unfortunately was traveling elsewhere at the time. We designed the workshop around the concepts of initial presentations to allow the audience to be introduced to and catch up with recent relevant research work and interests by members of the CGM Working Group and others within the wider community; specific demonstrations of CGM activities, products and access to date; then breakout groups allow as many voices as possible to be heard to solicit feedback and input; and open discussion sessions to map out the most pressing research and future directions. We concluded the workshop with a renewed enthusiasm for the collective effort, individual contributions and, crucially, a raised awareness among the geodetic and user communities, particularly among early-career participants and those focused on northern California. We heard direct invocation of the CGM in presentations and at posters throughout the remainder of the Annual Meeting in the days after our workshop. The workshop’s web page at https://www.scec.org/events/2024-SCEC-CGM-Workshop/ archives the agenda, presentations and participants. |
SCEC Community Models Used | Community Geodetic Model (CGM) |
Usage Description | This workshop was designed to advertise and provide community feedback on the Community Geodetic Model. |
Intellectual Merit | This workshop was critical to bring together members of the CGM Working Group and potential contributors and users, in person, to discuss the current status and near- and intermediate-future plans for one of the SCEC Community Earth Models. |
Broader Impacts | This workshop allowed the Community Geodetic Model to be advertised widely on the SCEC mailing lists, attracted new potential contributors and users, and allowed us to encourage and promote early-career voices. |
Project Participants | Mike Floyd (MIT) and Katia Tymofyeyeva (NASA/JPL) organized and led the workshop. Dani Lindsay (UC Berkeley) and Taimi Mulder (NRCan) assisted with moderating the two halves of the plenary presentation session. Tom Herring (MIT), Zheng-Kang Shen (UCLA), Lane Souza (SIO/UCSD) and Roland Burgmann (UC Berkeley) presented plenary talks by invitation. Kathryn Materna (CU Boulder) also presented material on formats and readers for the current CGM (InSAR) products, as a key person in the CGM Working Group. |
