SCEC’s Physics-Based Seismic Hazard Modeling Platforms

Seismic hazard analysis is a key tool for strengthening societal resilience to future damaging earthquakes, and SCEC has long recognized the importance of improving seismic hazard models. This presentation will highlight SCEC's physics-based seismic hazard software platforms: the Broadband Platform (BBP) and CyberShake. The Broadband Platform (BBP) performs 1D broadband ground motion simulations with rapid time-to-solution, while CyberShake performs 3D physics-based seismic hazard analysis through high performance computing-enabled ground motion simulations. These complementary tools have served as integration points, bringing together advances in SCEC science in areas such as velocity models, kinematic rupture generators, and site response to continue to produce a rich suite of cutting-edge seismic hazard products, including seismograms, intensity measures, and hazard curves. This presentation will include the methodologies and approaches behind these tools, their contributions to date, and mechanisms for community access to these tools and data products. Future efforts include the integration of new input velocity and source models, uncertainty quantification, nonlinear effects, and surrogate models to accelerate computation.
