Xaul Starr [They/He] is the Educational Specialist under the Office of Experiential Learning and Career Advancement for the Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC). He is tasked with the recruitment and management of the Summer Undergraduate research Experience (SURE) and the Supported Opportunities for Undergraduates and Researchers to Collaborate on Earthquake Science (SOURCES) Internship programs at SCEC. In their role, Xaul assists and encourages students to achieve their STEM educational goals by mentoring students, providing key resources, and professional development workshops.
Xaul received his Bachelor of Science in Earth Science with a Concentration in Environmental Geology from the University of California Santa Cruz. While attending UCSC, Xaul advocated for student resources, hosted a variety of impactful workshops and programs, participated in outreach and retention programs, which helped them realize their passion in supporting the participation, and graduation, of marginalized and underrepresented communities in STEM. They aim to continue fostering a successful working and learning environment for all students who are a part of the SCEC community and attend USC!
