Liberty Locsin is a computer science undergraduate from Pasadena City College transferring to University of California, Riverside fall 2020. Her technical focus is data science and high performance computing. She is an Anita Borg scholar, member of Women in High Performance Computing, SWE, and SHPE. During SCEC SOURCES 2020, Liberty worked with the CyberShake group, where she created containers in the Frontera and Summit supercomputers and implemented tools to improve workflow. Liberty plans to pursue graduate school in the future.
Prior to working with CyberShake, she also studied applications of Artificial Intelligence in space during her Student Independent Research Internship at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Also, she has experience in web development for Caltech’s Lunar Trailblazer team. Other technical skills beyond her software background are electronics, sensors, and embedded systems. Her focus is on the applications of technological advancements in scientific research and implementing tools that facilitate research that could not have been done otherwise.
Leadership roles include Astronomy and Physic Club as President, Vice President and Speaker Coordinator from 2018 to 2020. The club focused on doing Physics projects, enriching students by visiting research labs, career development, participating in science outreach efforts in the community, and facilitating talks from researchers. Club members volunteered at science outreach events such as PCC’s Noche de Ciencias, Carnegie Observatory Lectures at PCC, Caltech’s Science for March, and Caltech’s Stargazing Lecture series. During this time, she was also part of the League of STEM, an interdisciplinary effort to spread STEM awareness in the school.
In her spare time, she participates in hackathons, tinkers with software defined radio, works on electronics projects, designs printed circuit boards, sings karaoke with her friends, draws and goes on hikes.
