Scenarios as agents of change

Oral Presentation

2026 SCEC Annual Meeting, SCEC Contribution #15649
How do we implement proactive measures en masse that help our communities strengthen their physical and social infrastructure before the next large earthquake? One efficacious approach involves the utilization of scenarios, exemplified by the original ShakeOut 1.0. By employing narratives and analogies, coupled with insights from relational communication theory and the scientific community, we can more effectively harness scenarios to promote collective decision-making on seismic safety priorities and policies. This presentation explores social theories that can enhance effectiveness and optimize the precious time we have before the ground shakes again.
