Great social science for great earthquakes

In 2008, the ShakeOut Scenario was published, using the most cutting edge science and instruments available at the time to illustrate what Southern California might experience if a M7.8 earthquake were to take place on the San Andreas. Now, 20 years later, new datasets and modeling capabilities allow us to reimagine the scenario and add an aftershock to the complexities of what might happen. Another major development in the tools available to mitigate earthquake impact is ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW.) The new scenario will include implications of ShakeAlert as a public safety tool for a hazard-ready nation.
In the new scenario social science research is being considered from the onset of the project. We are considering how social science research can enhance preparedness, response, mitigation, and resiliency in different ways. During this interactive poster session, we will crowdsource SCEC participants’ thoughts and ideas about social factors in the context of a large earthquake.
