Project Abstract
This project developed a subset of CyberShake numerically simulated ground motions that were selected and vetted for use in engineering response history analyses. Ground motions were selected that have seismological properties and response spectra representative of conditions in the Los Angeles area, and have undergone some vetting to check their suitability for response history analysis. The process used to select the time series, the characteristics of the resulting data, and the provided documentation, are described in the project report.
Intellectual Merit Resulting in large part from several years of focused SCEC effort, confidence is growing in the science and engineering communities that high quality ground motion simulations offer valuable insights to engineers. This research investigated how we can now effectively filter the large quantities of available simulations into the most relevant and valuable subset of data. Insights from this work will support future efforts to develop software tools that provide hazard and ground motion information to engineers.
Broader Impacts CyberShake simulations remain largely untapped as a source of time series for engineers. This project thus aims to broaden access to the CyberShake time series, by addressing a desire from the UGMS committee, and developing a protocol for ground motion selection that can then be used to provide data via SCEC's web tools.
