SCEC2025 Plenary Talk, Community Capability Building (CCB)
Do consumers of news secretly love earthquakes? Hear from a reporter on strategies to get out good, accurate information to the public
Oral Presentation
2025 SCEC Annual Meeting, SCEC Contribution #14613
The media landscape of 2025 is undoubtedly different than the one of 2015 — so what’s the best way for earthquake scientists to communicate with the public before and during seismic events? As a reporter for the Los Angeles Times since 2004, with experience covering not only earthquakes but other natural hazards and the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ll offer some perspective as a journalist what helps reporters find stories and convey accurate and timely information about earthquakes, what stories do well, the latest strategies that are incredibly helpful in disseminating news about research, lessons we can learn from other fields that deal with natural hazards, and social media strategies. And I’ll be available for questions.
