Three-dimensional seismic velocity models in the vicinity of the 2008 Chino Hills Mw5.4 earthquake, California

We develop three-dimensional P- and S-wave velocity models for the 2008 Mw5.4 Chino-Hills earthquake region in the greater Los Angeles basin, southern California, by using the double-difference tomography algorithm. The model is represented by a uniform 10 km horizontal grid and the vertical node intervals are between 2 and 5 km. Available active-source data are included in the inversion, along with the catalog phase picks from about 2,800 earthquakes. Our model shows similar velocities as the Southern California Earthquake Center Harvard Community Velocity Model (CVM) for the shallow depths, but significantly different velocity anomalies in the deeper layers, especially in the mainshock area. This updated model should be helpful to improve the CVM for southern California.
