Community Seismic Network (CSN): A 1200-station permanent array in Los Angeles

The Community Seismic Network (CSN) has completed it expansion to cover all the schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). This brings the network to over 1200 permanent 3-component accelerometers that report in near-real-time to the Amazon cloud. Each station is a low-cost sensor coupled to a micro-computer (Raspberry-Pi) that is connected to the Internet. With support provided by the Hilton Foundation and a partnership with the California Geological Survey (CGS), the stations are located at 0.5 km spacing at the ground level, and on every floor of several high-rises. The partnership with CGS consists of deploying additional stations across the State of California to fill in geographical gaps in seismic instrumentation. The primary objective of the network is to provide dense observations of the strong motions following a major earthquake. The network also has a number of other scientific uses such as determining the high-resolution structure of the LA Basin, providing data to ShakeMap, and structural health monitoring of buildings.
