Project Abstract |
We propose to redate the stratigraphy at Glen Ivy marsh, which captures 6-7 surface ruptures along the Glen Ivy section of the northern Elsinore fault. We request funds to date 40 samples to test the age variance between seeds, bug parts and detrital charcoal, explicitly to increase the precision of the earthquake ages. We also request funding to cover page charges for formal publication of the paleoseismic history at this important site. The new data set will also be used by Oskin’s group at UC Davis in their study of earthquake recurrence patterns from long, well-dated paleoseismic records. |
| Intellectual Merit | Documenting the past occurrence of earthquakes in space and time is a critical component in developing an understanding of future earthquake hazard and risk, and is important in the testing of models of earthquake recurrence. This project has now better resolved the timing of the most recent seven ruptures along the northern Elsinore fault at Glen Ivy marsh. These data will contribute to the evolving paleoseismic database. |
| Broader Impacts | The principal contribution is a better quantification of the hazard posed by the northern Elsinore fault, which is capable of M7+ earthquakes. |
| Project Participants | T. Rockwell & M. Oskin were the two principal contributors. The radiocarbon dates were run at John Southons CAMS facility at UC Irvine. |
