Project Abstract |
SCEC researchers make extensive use various computing resources and tools, including high-performance and cloud computing, observational and simulated data, community earth models, open-source software, and complex software stacks. Many projects also need better information sharing, data access, and delivery tools. The shared SCEC research computing (RC) and cyberinfrastructure (CI) initiative aims to allocate SCEC capabilities and resources, particularly software developer time, to support projects funded through the annual collaboration process. This initiative is crucial for SCEC researchers working on community models, forecast evaluation, ground motion modeling, and seismic hazard analysis. Since 2020, SCEC has tracked community requests for shared RC/IT. Over the years, many proposals have requested support, with most being funded and often exceeding budget estimates for the shared RC/IT infrastructure, highlighting a greater-than-expected need for developer support. This emphasizes the need for better tracking to allocate developer time effectively, with project numbers and funding dynamics varying based on external funding availability. |
Intellectual Merit | Access to shared research computing and infrastructure resources enables progress in science questions that rely on these resources for data analysis, visualization, and high-performance computing. |
Broader Impacts | Funding support for SCEC developers who help refine SCEC science products in terms of IT services, data visualization, and data analysis, all of which are relevant for the broader community and for the conduction, presentation and dissemination of SCEC researchers’ science problems and results. |
