Project Abstract |
As planned, we have conducted analysis to the realistic artificial synthetic dataset produced during the great Southern California Shakeout (Jones et al., 2008). Our analysis includes two components: constraining the complex fault geometry using long period local strong motion data with a multiple double couple (MDC) inversion approach, and finite fault inversion using CISN strong stations. But the inversion results are not satisfied, presumably due to complex 3D structure across San Andreas fault. In the meantime, we have constrained the rupture processes of the 2013 Mw 4.8 Isla Vista earthquake and 2014 Mw 6 Napa Valley earthquake using the strong motion data. |
Intellectual Merit | The study improves us the understanding to two moderate earthquakes in California. It also emphasizes the significance to have correct 3D earth response. |
Broader Impacts | Both the 2013 Isla Vista earthquake and 2014 Napa earthquake are the largest local events for over 20 years. |
