Project Abstract |
We have performed validation studies using simulated ground motions from the SCEC Broadband platform, and produced a number of new tests of those simulations from an engineering perspective. The categories of study we have pursued include: 1. Computation of elastic spectra correlations, at pairs of spectral periods, within a given motion. 2. Computation of polarization of elastic spectra, as measured by variation in the spectrum at a given period as the horizontal orientation of interest varies. 3. Detection of velocity pulses in near-fault simulations, for comparison with pulses observed from comparable recordings. 4. Computation of dynamic response of a three-dimensional structural model, when subjected to simulated and recorded ground motions with equivalent response spectra. |
Intellectual Merit | This work helps identify properties of simulated ground motions of engineering interest that may need further validation efforts. |
Broader Impacts | We are contributing to the education of engineers regarding the state-of-the-art in ground motion simulation, and how this science can benefit engineering practic. |
