Project Abstract |
This project was to fund Weldon’s participation in the Working Group for California Earthquake Probabilities (WGCEP) to build the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF) v.3. Weldon has actively participated as a member of the Executive Committee and is in charge of or participated in the construction of 9 key elements of the model. These have been written up and preliminary drafts exist at the WGCEP website: http://wgcep.org/manuscripts |
Intellectual Merit | The Working Group for California Earthquake Probabilities (WGCEP) process to build the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF) version 3, requires the integration of a wide range of data and earthquake related processes that are part of SCEC's research objectives. Some of Weldon's contributions include slip rates on active faults, recurrence intervals of ground rupturing earthquakes, scaling relationships for faults, creep rates and how they reduce seismic moment production on faults, and numerous other scientific issues that need to be addressed to build a seismic hazard model. |
Broader Impacts | Working Group for California Earthquake Probabilities (WGCEP) Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF) will be used to numerous seismic hazard reduction activities including informing the source model for the next generation of the National Seismic Hazard Map, and earthquake insurance rates through the California Earthquake Authority, which is cosponsoring the project. |
