Intellectual Merit The San Andreas fault is both an important natural laboratory for understanding fault systems, and the largest source of seismic hazard in California. In this project we attempted to develop a relatively new technology, ground penetrating radar, for non-disruptive research that would allow us to collect data more rapidly, and at lower cost. Our findings suggest that GPR has limited utility for paleoseismic research on the San Andreas fault in the Carrizo Plain, but it has great potential for surveys of endemic burrowing animals in the Carrizo National Monument.
Broader Impacts This project was featured in a public radio story by award winning journalist Molly Petersen. The story can be accessed at

It was initially broadcast in southern California on KPCC public radio, and then to a broader audience as part of public radio's California Report.
