This project constrains the paleoseismology and slip rate of the San Gorgonio Pass fault zone, part of the San Andreas system of faults in southern California. It also tests the ShakeOut Scenario Model for the southern San Andreas fault and seems to show that this type of very large earthquake is likely but probably happens relatively infrequently, every 500-1000 yrs. This contrasts with the more frequent, though generally smaller, San Andreas earthquakes to either side of San Gorgonio Pass that recur every 100-200 yrs. The project also tries to better understand the cosmogenic radiogenic nuclide age-dating method by dating surfaces and 'modern' materials from Millard Canyon. This test of the CRN method has broad implications for geoscientist who apply this method to landform age dating. |
Broader Impacts
|
This project has supported three graduate students at CSUN who to complete their MSc thesis. P. McBurnett;s thesis will report on the findings of a trench site in Millard Canyon; S. Ramzan's thesis will report on the findings of a trench site near Cabazon, CA; and K. McGuire's thesis will report on the CRN age-dating results of geomorphic features in Millard Canyon. Four CSUN students have helped as field assistants (J. Fleck, M. Stella, D. Brand, and J. Cook). In addition, both Heermance and Yule have incorporated the data collected for this study in their lectures and labs (Geology of Earthquakes, Yule; Stratigraphy, Heermance). Both faculty have led student field trips to these field sites, and Yule led a GSA-Cordilleran field trip to these sites in June of 2010. Heermance and Yule, and students, have collaborated with K. Kendrick, J. Tinsley, and J. Matti all of the USGS on this project. |
