Intellectual Merit The primary mission of the Southern San Andreas Fault Evaluation project is to document the rate and size of earthquakes on the San Andreas system. This project seeks to document the earthquake history of a complex stretch of the system, the nexus of the San Bernardino and Mojave strands of the San Andreas fault and the northern end of the San Jacinto fault. Although permitting has slowed this project, the products from this work will inform questions of stress transfer, fault linkages, and slip rate studies that are used in earthquake hazard modeling.
Broader Impacts This project provided field mapping experience and support for a female geology undergraduate student at Appalachian State University and will fund a second student in the summer of 2011 on remaining funds.
