Intellectual Merit SCEC has developed a tremendous amount of knowledge in the field of physics-based ground motion simulation. The expected outcome of this project is a better understanding of the differences, if any, in structural response between recorded and physics-based simulated ground motions.
Broader Impacts The contribution of this project is to provide engineers in both research and practice with a better understanding of physics-based simulations. We believe that the collaboration between SCEC scientists and research engineers will benefit both groups. With regard to applied science, the goal is for engineers to have access to a larger set of time series for events that may have not been yet recorded. For the simulated time series to be used, engineers must understand how they affect the response of structural models. For the SCEC scientists, the main benefit will be to have their products recognized and used in the broader technical community. SCEC simulators can benefit from feedback from engineers on specific properties of ground motions, and further develop their methods to respond to a growing need. The hope is that a better science will help develop better computational tools that in turn will help the whole earthquake community to truly reduce the impact of earthquakes.
