Project Abstract
|
The proposal herein is to take to fruition a project to collect, analyze, and present in a uniform manner previously mapped and documented rupture traces and surface slip distributions for all historical earthquakes. The resulting collection of observations will serve as a source of reference as well as a SCEC product to the broad sector of scientists and user community involved with SCEC. Additionally, the data set will allow me and others within SCEC to systematically consider and provide observational constraint to ideas and issues ranging from predicting the endpoints of future ruptures, the relationship of rupture directivity to fault geometry, the relationship of surface slip distributions to rupture directivity, the the quantitative estimation of surface rupture hazard, to the dynamics of the earthquake rupture process itself. |
