Understanding near-fault ground motion characteristics is a crucial element for advanced seismic hazard assessment. Physics-based seismic modeling has become popular to simulate 3-component full-phase ground motions, especially in the near-source region for large earthquakes. Characterizing earthquake source processes with 1-point and 2-point statistics of key kinematic source parameters, such as earthquake slip, rupture velocity, and slip velocity, was proposed and its efficiency has been successfully demonstrated by follow-up studies. In this presentation, we emphasize that the link between earthquake source and ground motion characteristics can be more efficiently investigated in the framework of 1-point and 2-point statistics of both earthquake source and ground motion parameters. In particular, we focus on the effect of earthquake source correlation features on the inter-frequency correlation of ground motions. We found that the inter-frequency correlation of ground motions, especially between-event correlation, can be directly controlled by perturbing earthquake source statistics. This type of study may help to understand not only 1-point statistics, e.g., mean and standard deviation, of ground motions, but also their 2-point statistics, e.g., inter-frequency correlation, in a very consistent manner, which may contribute to improving our physics-based seismic source modeling schemes for advanced seismic hazard assessment.
